Blue Marzano Tomato Solanum lycopersicum
This unusual tomato is not an heirloom, rather a new twist to the classic Italian red paste tomato called San Marzano. Not true blue, the color is more akin to eggplant purple, and the flesh ripens maroon-red while the skin turns deep brown. The dark skin retards ripening in the fall once the weather turns cool, so this variety should be planted early as a mid-season crop. It makes a tasty addition to summer salads. The fruit is about 2 ½ inches long tapering to a point. The vines are short, no more than 3 feet long, thus this variety can be grown in tubs or containers. Minimum 20 seeds $4.50
