Brown Dutch Winter Lettuce
Lactuca sativa
This is one of the rarest of all the 18th century lettuces in Roughwood’s collection. It is the same as the Laitue brune de Hollande described by Frenchman Abbé Rozier in 1785. Generally raised in colonial America as a fall forcing lettuce for cold frames, the leaves will acquire bronze tints when exposed to cold weather. 10-12 inches in diameter. Minimum 30 seeds.
