Vigna unguiculata
This is an old-time Afro-Creole variety grown in Philadelphia gardens at least since 1800 and sold commercially by Bernard M’Mahon as early as 1806. It was also grown at Monticello by Thomas Jefferson. A vining climber, it is generally grown like a pole bean since it produces long spaghetti-like pods up to 24 inches long. The green pods rather than the small red seeds are the part most valued by cooks. Minimum of 30 seeds per packet.
