Phaseolus vulgaris.

 

A classic and reliable black bean! This particualr variety has been sold in Paris as early as 1806 under the name P. nigerrimus Jussieu. J. M. Thorburn & Co. in NY promoted it commercially in the late 1840s, and it appeared in an article “Valuable New Vegetables,” The Horticulturist (Albany), II (April 1848), 464 as something new and unusual. 3 to 4 ft vines (bush with long runner), needs short stakes (3 ft runner). Great as a soup or for refried beans! ~20 seed minimum per packet.
