Phaseolus vulgaris
 
This 120-day bean came to us with very little documentation, but it is a snap bean par excellence.  Bechtel is an old Pennsylvania Dutch name of Schwenkelder origin and is still common in Montgomery County where the sect settled. We have added it to our Collection because we are committed to preserving our regional food heritage. Despite its name, the bean shares characteristics with the Pennsylvania Railroad Spike Bean from Fayette County, PA.  Very good for canning and freezing.
