Capsicum annuum
 
This highly ornamental pepper came into the Roughwood Seed Collection during the early 1940s via African American folk painter Horace Pippin. But it traces back even earlier to Francois Supiot, French market gardener of Lilac Farm (Chester County, PA), who introduced it from France. Tall, 3-4 foot bushes with black stems and black-green leaves. Erect somewhat bullet-shaped fruit ripen from black to brown to bright red. Hot and spicy!!!
