Large Perpignan (aka Defiance)

This extremely rare and unusual lettuce with twisted cabbage-like leaves was introduced into England from Berlin in 1827 under the British name Avon Defiance. It was later introduced into the United States in 1869 by J. M. Thorburn of New York but was mentioned as early as 1785 in the French encyclopedia of Abbé Rozier and may date to the late 1600s.
