Large Red Plantain 
Plantago major rubrifolia 
Grown today mostly as an ornamental, this hardy perennial was used historically as a tender spring salad green or as potherb when mature. It was extolled in old herbals for its use in herbal remedies and is mentioned in the 1768 installment of Sauer’s Philadelphia herbal.
