León Violet Pole Bean

Phaseolus vulgaris

Known locally as Frijoles violettas de León, this unusual ancient landrace from the region around León, Nicaragua is used in traditional cookery both as a snap bean and as a dry bean.  The snap beans are flat, and violet speckled along the edges, while the ripe (dry) seeds are deep violet.  The dry beans are cooked with rice or used in refry recipes.  Considered a semi-pole, some plants produce pods close to the ground while others send up 4-to-5-foot runners. High yields.  Minimum 25 seeds. Germination 95%.
