Lactuca sativa
Considered a fall forcing lettuce for cold frames, this variety was reintroduced by W. Atlee Burpee in 1888 as California Cream Butter.  However, it quickly became a mainstay in the seed catalogs of William Henry Maule of Philadelphia and by degrees it acquired the Maule name.  In fact, the lettuce traces to a pre-1860s English variety called Black Seeded Butter.  50-60 seeds. $4.00
