Okra “Stubby”
Abelmoscus esculentus
This easy to grow variety of okra is the oldest documented okra grown in the Middle Atlantic states. An early form of Stubby is depicted in a circa 1820 still life painting by Philadelphia painter James Peale. Plants are about 3 ½ feet tall thus better suited to kitchen gardens than the taller varieties. Pods are best for culinary purposes when 2 ½ inches long.
