Vigna unguiculata
Introduced by W. Atlee Burpee in 1890 as a garden novelty, this rampantly vining cowpea produces an abundance of pretzel-shaped pods. The green pods can be cooked like string beans when young or added to stir fries. The seeds, which come in an array of browns and tans, can be cooked like blackeye peas. They can also be ground into flour for making bread. These are fast growers so they can be planted in Zone 6. We have allowed them to ramble over the ground, but they do best when trellised.
~40 seeds per packet.
