Red Ruffled Tomato Pepper
Capsicum annuum
This extremely old heirloom pepper dates to at least the 18 th century and was commonly called a “tomato pepper” because of its flat, oblate shape. This heavily pleated sweet pepper ripens reddish black on 2-to-3-foot plants. Fruits are about 3 inches in diameter. Illustrated in the Album Vilmorin for 1865 and discussed in Dr. Weaver’s Heirloom Vegetable Gardening.
