Seneca Bird Egg Pole Bean B
Phaseolus vulgaris
We became interested in this attractive speckled bean because of its unusual flavor and culinary qualities. And while it is commonly sold in the US as the Seneca Bird Egg Bean, it is the same as the famous sapitos (little toads) in the cuisine of Chile. This is considered a pre-Columbian bean in that part of the Andes and conforms to the unique genetic types that evolved there separately from Mexico. If there is indeed a Seneca connection (doubtful) it would be of recent date since the government of Chile did not donate this bean to USDA until 1988. It is widely used as a soup and stewing bean in Chile. Scarce. 20 seeds.
