Raphanus sativus
White Strasburg is a radish tracing to the Middle Ages. It is thought to have been disseminated from Byzantium via the Order of St. of Jerusalem, hence its other alias, Hospital Radish. This is considered a summer radish with 4 to 6 inch oval roots. It was illustrated life size and in full color in the Album Benary (Erfurt, Germany) in 1893. In Byzantine Greek culture white radishes of this type were consumed at the beginning of each meal to prevent drunkenness. Very rich in Vitamin C, so it was also used as a cold remedy in the hospices of the Order of St. John.
