Winter Brunette (Frisée d’Amerique)
Lactuca sativa
This popular heirloom was first mentioned in German seed catalogs in 1874 and then listed by Vilmorin in 1882 as Laitue frisée à couper d’Amerique. It is known by many commercial names including Prizehead, Tomhannock, and Winter Brunette. The numerous aliases came about because different strains display richer color or more frilly leaves. But they are all the same lettuce. It is treated as a winter lettuce in Mediterranean climates, but elsewhere as a cut-and-cut-again summer lettuce. Minimum 50 seeds.
